Over the last month a number of articles have popped up around the web discussing the shortage of skilled construction labor. A survey by the Associated General Contractors of America last September reported that 86% of contractors throughout the US were struggling to fill hourly craft jobs, or salaried professional positions.
There are a couple of factors playing into this dearth of labor. There are fewer young people entering the field, a misconception of trade careers, and a decline in immigration. One of the big factors is the demographic void of women in the construction industry.
In light of this Construction Dive has published a list of 10 things we can all do to help make the construction environment more inclusive for women. The list is divided into things that companies, male employees, and female employees can do to create a better environment.
Companies:
- Raise Awareness
- Implement policies for inclusion
- Ensure fair hiring practices
- Host informal events to discuss employee experiences
Men:
- Respect the abilities and merit of women colleagues
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions
Women:
- Speak up when harassment or discrimination occurs
- Don’t let sexism become the ultimate roadblock
